Forklift Basics
A forklift is an all-around machinery. It is a small vehicle that has attachments on the front that enable it to lift and move a variety of loads. Forklifts are common features in warehouses and factories. A forklift operator needs to acquire special training, particularly since these machines function on rear-wheel drive and this can be very hard to get used to until one is familiar with it. Since the forklift carries its load at the front, the center of gravity is continually shifting and this results in the machine being somewhat unstable.
Parts
Typically, a forklift operator generally sits in an area known as the "cat." This particular area provides metal protection that stretches overhead like a roof. On the front of the machinery, the mast is situated. The mast is the mechanism which raises and lowers the load using hydraulic cylinders.

Structural Components
The overhead guard is part of the top portion of the forklift, whereas the foot guard separates the cabin from the load. A counterweight is situated at the back of the forklift and is installed there with a purpose to keep the equipment from falling over.
The forks and Apron
The load apron is usually responsible for keeping the load positioned well on the metal arms, or forks, cradle the load. The blades can be tilted with a purpose to balance the cargo. This is accomplished with the tilting ram and the hydraulic hoist arm that powers the upward fork movement.
The Lift Structure
The guard of the load apron extends well above the apron. It works to keep the cargo balanced when the tines carry it along the track of the arms of the upright.
Mechanics
The internal engine on the forklift allows power to be sent to the wheels of the machinery. This is what makes the forklift move. The wheels have brakes installed so as to allow the operator the chance to slow down or stop the machinery as required.
Controls
The lift is operated using hoist controls which resemble a bunch of stick-shaped levers. The lift truck is driven by using the steering wheel to turn, similar to a truck or car.
