Forklift Battery Safety
The large industrial sized batteries utilized to power electric lift trucks must be charged frequently and correctly maintained. Safety measures must be followed while somebody connects the battery to the charger. It is very essential to inspect fluid levels in the battery.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is important for anybody working with a forklift battery. Full protection includes goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The right way to protect both clothing and skin from leaked acid or other residue is to wear an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash station should be situated close to the charging area. The route to the station should not be obstructed and an employee who is injured must be able to reach the eyewash post from the charging place within 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The battery and charger should be at the same amperage. It must be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are prohibited near a charging area and battery. Never allow things such as matches or lighters to be utilized when somebody is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
It is important to keep the battery charging area well ventilated. The recharging process could cause fumes to be released. These fumes are both toxic and explosive.
