Choosing Between Cushion & Pneumatic Tires
Significantly contributing to the handling and safety of the machine are forklift tires. They also affect the maintenance costs. The type of forklift determines to a large extent the kind of tire as most forklifts are constructed with a particular frame which accepts just a specific type of tire. It helps to know the properties of both pneumatic and cushion tires prior to choosing a tire.
Instructions
1 Check your forklift owner guidebook for specifications concerning tires. Most likely your forklift runs either on cushion tires or pneumatic tires. This would limit your options to the kind of tire for which the forklift frame is made.
2 Make certain you know the specific kind of forklift you are utilizing. Electric pallet jack trucks and electric forklift trucks generally are constructed to utilize cushion tires which do not require a lot of friction. Pneumatic tires are normally for forklifts that run on diesel or liquid propane gas.
3 Make sure you know what kind of ground you will be using the forklift on. Soft cushion tires are made for even terrain while pneumatic tires are best for rough terrain. Cushion tires, if used on grounds which are not even, could cause the forklift to get stuck because they are set lower. Pneumatic tires perform well on crushed concrete, gravel and packed stones but not on potholed surfaces and very rough terrain.
4 Check space limitations. Forklifts utilized mainly for indoor applications have to be able to pivot in tight spaces. Cushion tires work better than pneumatic tires in those kinds of conditions.
